What is Black Animal Syndrome?

Black Animal Syndrome is a phenomenon where animals with black fur are overlooked for adoption at shelters. Several reasons feed into this experience.

• Antiquated beliefs, folklore and misnomers. Many cultures look upon black animals as bad luck. Some cultures believe that the black dog aka hellhound is the devil and a black cat is an imp or witches familiar.
• Superstitions that black animals are evil and will bring misfortune into your life or upon your family.
• Subconscious responses towards black animals -- many people simply are not consciously aware of any bias.
• Black fur may not show as well as other colors
